If you want to go to a conference there are plenty to choose from. Some are 1 day, 2 day, even 3 0r 4 day events. Some are enormous and fill arenas while others are smaller and more regional. Whatever your favorite flavor there’s a conference for you. So why SmallChurchBIGDeal? What sets this conference apart from all the others? This conference isn’t put on by a big church telling other churches how they got that way. This conference is put on by a small church for other small churches. We don’t think being a small church is a problem to be solved. It’s a reality to embrace, love and understand. We want SmallChurchBIGDeal (SCBD) to be encouraging but also practical. We don’t pretend to have all the answers to pastoring the small church but we think we can help. Last year was our first ever conference. We weren’t sure how to put on a conference but we heard some great feedback: “SCBD ministered to me and encouraged my heart . . . plus I learned a thing or two.” “SCBD was well worth the drive!” “Very helpful, great environment”. “I learned alot and the knowledge of the speakers on the topic was phenomenal.” “Nothing could have been done better – excellence achieved.” All of our breakout sessions were led by pastors experienced in pastoring a small church. This makes SCBD interactive. Attendees aren’t coming to simply download information – you’re coming to hear ideas and be given a chance to respond with some ideas of your own. After all, who knows more about pastoring small churches than pastors of small churches! You’ll hear great information and learn a lot but you’ll also have a chance to weigh in on issues facing the small church. You’ll be encouraged and get to encourage other pastors and leaders. So . . . Our keynote speakers will bring encouragement and the challenge to continue to shift our paradigm as it relates to the small church; And our breakout sessions give you, the pastor, the chance to hear from other pastors on topics ranging from “Small rural church vs. small urban church” to “Leading change in a small church”. The goal for SCBD is that we encourage you long after the conference ends. One way we can do that is by giving away dozens of resources including books, music and whatever our sponsors donate. But that’s not all. We also want to bless pastors with simple things – items that give you an opportunity to spend time with the people in your life that matter – your spouse and your kids. And of course, just like last year, there will be several tables full of resources to purchase that can help you in your ministry once the conference is over. Watch a video about the how Small Church BIG Deal came to be

God’s most potent earthly weapon is the local church. Through Christ it has the power to change lives, communities and entire nations. But somewhere between the empty tomb and today, we started believing that bigger was always better. And big is good. But so is small. In fact, we believe that small is a BIG deal. Pastors wrestle with comparisons, discouragement and unmet expectations. What if pastors embraced the church they have instead of wishing for the church they don’t? What if we started asking – What can God do with small?
We have three big dreams for the small church BIG deal conference . . .
Encourage the pastor of the small church (along with their spouse and leadership team) to stay obedient, faithful and see the beauty of the ministry God has given them
Equip the pastor of the small church to boldly and confidently handle the issues unique to the small church.
Envelop the pastor of the small church with love, blessing and inspiration so he can fully embrace the joy of his calling
Our keynote speaker this year is Tim Suttle. Tim is a pastor, writer, and musician. His latest book is called Shrink: Faithful Ministry in a Church Growth Culture (Zondervan, Sept. 2014). Tim often writes for the Religion Section of The Huffington Post, and his work has been featured at The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Sojourners, and Immerse Journal. Tim is the author of An Evangelical Social Gospel? (Cascade Books, 2011), and Public Jesus (The House Studio, 2012). Tim is also the founder and front-man of the popular Christian band Satellite Soul, with whom he toured for nearly a decade. Tim has a BS from Kansas State University, and an MDiv. from Nazarene Theological Seminary. Tim has planted three flourishing churches over the past 15 years and is the Senior Pastor of Redemption Church in Olathe, Kan.
